Visualization Segment Producers

Minutes and Summary scribed by Dana Berry 2 February 2005

Specific Recommendations Summary

  1. NASA should give more credit.
  2. 2. DE-ITAR models and make them accessible.

3.  Dedicate a technical agent to help visualizers.  This should not be a PAO position, but should be a person with technical expertise.   There should be one such person per NASA campus.

4.  The technical agent will create a central repository and gather the things we need. Pre-approved, on-line access based on privileges and registration would be set up by this technical agent which would allow artists to login and deep search the repository 24/7.

5.  NASA needs to digitize and catalog its imagery, especially unique film footage now decaying on non-archival film stock.

MINUTES

Frank Summers called us to order:

Credit the artists

Mike McClare ditto

BIG GRIPE SESSION about CREDIT

Dan Maas complained that he got no credit, this makes him less willing to work for NASA.

Tom Casey credit is needed for getting extra/further work.

McClare scientists should let artists/producers have credit

Don Davis paintings allow name on bottom.

Steve Savatch why is NASA cutting the credit off?

Tom Casey Nat Geo gives little credit

Taxpayer dollars make art public domain.

Recommendation:  NASA should give more credit.

Who needs what from NASA?

Recommendation: DE-ITAR models and make them accessible

ÒITARÓ is military blocking of access to spacecraft models

Kevin from JPL explained ITAR

Models of spacecraft

Dan Maas  use a room for a reflection map on MYLAR

Mike McClare- NASA wonÕt let ANYTHING out without a review.

Ka Chun, a stipulation for the project is to give a de-ITARED model

Each NASA mission has a percentage dedicated to outreach.

Kevin says NASA will help but needs CHARGE NUMBERS.

RECOMMENDATION:  Dedicate a technical agent to help visualizers.

Chief technology office.  Should not be a PAO position, but agency wide ideally one per NASA campus.  Get access to the models, de-ITAR the model, vellum drawings, etc.

Artists wonÕt give model for:  reduced market, trade secrets, quality control. 1 FTE

1 Central repository, gather the things we need. Pre-approved, on-line access based on privileges.

Tagging imagery, Lars ChristensenÕs (from ESA) group making meta tags.

Donna Cox suggested that hierarchical meta tagging imagery.

McClare – GSFC was hacked so security is an issue for being able to provide an archive.

Application,

Kevin JPL Right Hemisphere Òdeep searchÓ

One NASA My NASA Not your NASA.

1 Central repository, gather the things we need.

Access to scientists

NASA needs a librarian for imagery.  Library of Congress has one.  Technical agent

Imagery needs to post stuff on line.

Preserve your heritage.  Digitize and catalog your imagery, NASA.

When NASA evaluates RFP, do they prefer small shops versus large shops.

A premium on small teams that are jack-of-all-trades.

Money.  Is there enough?

No one at NASA has a background in marketing, but that should be changed.

Even if not released by NASA, it could still be valuable for NASA.

Don Davis revealed that he has been painting the apollo photos thus validating conspiracy theorists.
