Carolyn: produce planetarium/books
Anything moves can’t move out of frame. High res/.
Case study going to show –Hubble vision hubble images come with freight.
Needs for domes….
The path through that process;
Stock footage data base
Melissa – befriend the ascientist…get on their good side and then you get the stuff.
Now investigateing image banks to store the stuff. Make a friend senior producer for your field -- five or six people in agenc y who know everything.
On behalf of entire themes library of small MPEGs everything is archived
Old Kennedy footage model – is that not reallyl agency wide system?
Problem of NASA organization: organized by theme and/center not centrally.
Need central organization.
State of the field: centrality work tools . formats and different needs for different media.
Science museum community courtesy of astc is glued together
Form a regular meeting; aas/ agu / listserv
How do we make it useful…
We use images for reasons other than the scientists create them..
Centralized information aboukt produced pieces; need in field informational repository for other productions beyond raw data; fund transformation….
If there were a rolling mini grant system for archive;
Think about science re exploration….Exploration office take a pct. Mission bu dget use it for outreach and exploration.
Best lunar mosaics best archive….
NASA tv digital format….are Dish and Echo cgoing to be on board.
Best practices:
Mars Visualization/Museum alliance. Addresses many of things – a couple of people at JPL; consortium of producers science people etc. 140 museums and planetaria; periodic teleconferences evoleved to weekly sessions mission scienctis and manager – clearing house of info. That provided professional development for the user community. Post powerpoints. Provided web sites into MR mission get data right off the system.
One: provide the breadth of material. After every press conference; all of the visuals would be produced by visualization folks, pressed to dvd, both sd and HD; not heavily produced, it was the pieces. It evolved with time. Even these things are not necessarily usable; ten minute long clip etc. lot of people didn’t have the internal capability to rip stuff apart.
Relationships in community built. Way community to know what the capabilities are. Now has expanded into museum alliance. Deep impact, Huygens etc.
From NASA side buys great leverage. Anita Sohus at JPL…
Why did it work: JPL used to produce huge things and say take it…unusable. They actually listened to community – and they changed model.
Question: what about large solar storm?
Server based television. –
Always subjective – least amount of interpretation. narration
State of the Art
Best Practices
Desire
State of the Art:
Multiple users/
Multiple format desires technical issues dome vs flat, resolution
Multiple genre – everything from raw images to finished programs.
Difficult now to identify access points and connections between sources and end users
Best practices – consortia of the users and producers with regular mission updates.
Desires:
Databasing better organization information; centralization or universal interface not tied to the silos wthin NASA.
Image – bank model.
Professional development – contextual information transmissionl
NASA encouraging networking for television pros analogous to museum world.
More info about end use and reprocessed reworked images.
