Non-Theatrical to address Chapter 8
Minutes by Dana Berry
(Laura, for ease here I extracted the recommendations from the body of notes and
lined them up here).
* Definition of non-theatrical
Includes
TV
IMAX
Interactive Astronomy Software
Server-based TV, (video on demand) TIVO
DVD home theater
DVD ÒanglesÓ –Dave Brody
Cross-platform materials
Outdoor exhibits, interactive kiosks
Original, static illustrations
Print media
Print- flat, newspapers, magazines,
A visualization is something that you canÕt point a camera at and film.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I. DATABASES
* Legacy Work
* Streamline access to existing full frame (high rez images) and assets.
* create a cross-silo GUI.
* Meta data standards, should they be Google compatible? Can data be meta tagged.
DonÕt create a single repository of all data: Instead make a meta data base that tracks the location and type of data, NVO is moving in this direction.
* Education Group have a standard for meta-data and there ÒDLESEÓ should be consulted. DLESE.org
* public domain, and NASA should not assert any copyright over anything anyone does with NASA material, no claim or constraint
* Everything NASA produces should be public domain. (there was some discord over this) (does it apply to other countries?)
* NASA should specify the credit line it gets.
* Guidelines need to be updated. Better guidelines should be written and posted on the web and opened up made uniform, (JPL – Caltech is sited as the model).
3D spacecraft models should be made available from NASA and NASA should demand as a constraint on its partners that their models be available as well.
* Blanket access to low rez models.
II. NEW
ANIMATIONS
* Conceptual animations are needed that are not mission-specific. Someone should review existing animations and make recommendations. A person should be delegated to receive outside suggestions for conceptual animations and point them to animation that may already exist or decide if its worth making. Should include outside resource.
DISCUSSION MINUTES
Budget issues for re-tooling
NASA can provide editorial guidance, this is vital.
Amortizing the initial budget through cross-platform
Data at the high end
Sloan, 2 Mass, Geoserver There is a need for a layer of interface that
Makes it easy to work with existing databases.
NASA and ESA have different standards.
Distributed archives, better to have a local curator for each archive, but with a unified front end. Astrogoogle.
Should include visualizations as well as data sets.
No conceptual difference between real Hubble imageIf funding is 100% funding dollars, then data should be public domain.
Much debate about public domain. There is a minimum window for PBS that letÕs public tape for educational purposes copyrighted material.
