What's new in the Digital Universe?
Version 3.6, Released 19 December 2007
The latest version of the Digital Universe atlas is chock full of new data, including over 1 million galaxies, L and T dwarf stars, a 3-D Orion Nebula terrain model, Abell galaxy clusters, large-scale density contours, and plenty of additional data updates.
- 1 Million Sloan M Stars
One million stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey allow us to see into the Milky Way's halo. Each of these stars is a main-sequence, M-type star. These are cool, long-lived stars, too dim to see with the unaided eye.- Select Star Orbits
In this data set, we highlight the trajectories of seven stars over the course of the next one billion years. (Two are shown in this image.) See the varied motion of the stars in and out of the Galactic disk.- Nearby Stars
With over 3,000 newly discovered stars, this data set displays our latest knowledge about the nearby stars. Within its 100-light-year-radius sphere, it contains over 7,000 stars. Compare that to Hipparcos, which has less than 2,500 stars in the same volume.- New Open Star Cluster Catalog

We have included a new open star catalog (pictured left) which includes 60% more data than the previous catalog (pictured right). This new catalog is the most up-to-date catalog and is used by scientists. - Enhanced 2MASS Galaxy Catalog
The 2MASS Galaxy data set, introduced in the previous update, is now enhanced with over 35,000 labels. Also, a redshift code is now included. Using preset selection expressions, cull out the 6dF Survey (shown), the Sloan Galaxies, or redshifts from 6 other catalogs.- Plus...
