The Galactic coordinates are similar to the celestial coordinates in that they are provided in the Extragalactic Atlas for context. The fundamental plane of the system is defined by the Milky Way's disk, acting as the Galactic equator in our sky. The Galactic poles point directly out of the plane of the Galaxy. For more information, see “Galactic Coordinates Sphere.”
